What is IRS letter 6419?

12/29/2021

The IRS will send this important notice at the end January to those who received advance Child Tax Credit payments in 2021.
Why is the letter so important? The information in this form will help you report your CTC advance payments correctly and it will help you claim the other half of your Child Tax Credit.

We strongly encourage you to reference IRS letter 6419 before you file your taxes. Using incorrect amounts on your return could trigger a manual review of your return, which could delay your return and refund for weeks even months.

Why is my refund different than the amount on the tax return I filed?

12/27/2021

All or part of your refund may have been used (offset) to pay off past-due federal tax, state income tax, state unemployment compensation debts, child support, spousal support, or other federal nontax debts, such as student loans. To find out if you may have an offset or if you have questions about an offset, contact the IRS to which you owe the debt.
IRS also may have changed your refund amount because they made changes to your tax return. This may include corrections to any incorrect Recovery Rebate Credit amount. You’ll get a notice explaining the changes. Where’s My Refund? will reflect the reasons for the refund offset when it relates to a change in your tax return.
Tax Topic 203, Refund Offsets for Unpaid Child Support, Certain Federal and State Debts, and Unemployment Compensation Debts has more information about refund offsets.

Its been over 21 days. What now?

12/27/2021

It's been longer than 21 days since the IRS received my return and I haven’t gotten my refund. Why? Some tax returns take longer to process than others for many reasons, including when a return:
  • Includes errors, such as incorrect Recovery Rebate Credit
  • Is incomplete
  • Needs further review in general
  • Is affected by identity theft or fraud
  • Includes a claim filed for an Earned Income Tax Credit or an Additional Child Tax Credit. See Q&A below.
  • Includes a Form 8379, Injured Spouse Allocation PDF, which could take up to 14 weeks to process
For the latest information on IRS refund processing during the COVID-19 pandemic, see the IRS Operations Status page.
IRS will contact you by mail when (or if) they need more information to process your return. If the IRS is still processing your return or correcting an error, neither Where’s My Refund? or our phone representatives will be able to provide you with your specific refund date. Please check Where’s My Refund? for updated information on your refund.

Does Where’s My Refund? update often?

12/27/2021

Once per day, usually at night. There’s no need to check more often.

I claimed the Earned Income Tax Credit. WHEN WILL I GET MY REFUND?

12/27/2021

According to the Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes (PATH) Act, the IRS cannot issue EITC and ACTC refunds before mid-February. The IRS expects most EITC/ACTC related refunds to be available in taxpayer bank accounts or on debit cards by the first week of March, if they chose direct deposit and there are no other issues with their tax return. Check Where’s My Refund for your personalized refund date.
Where’s My Refund? on IRS.gov and the IRS2Go mobile app remains the best way to check the status of a refund. WMR on IRS.gov and the IRS2Go app will be updated with projected deposit dates for most early EITC/ACTC refund filers by February 22. So EITC/ACTC filers will not see an update to their refund status for several days after Feb. 15.

Why do some refunds take longer?

12/27/2021

While the IRS issues 9 out of 10 tax refunds within 21 days, it's possible your return may require additional review and take longer to process.
For some taxpayers, income, and other identity-protection safeguards implemented by the IRS may account for longer wait times. Other things that can delay your refund include, but are not limited to:
  • Liens, back taxes, or refund offsets child support
  • EIC – Earned Income credit
  • College credit
  • Errors, inconsistencies, or missing information
  • Identity fraud
  • Form 8379, Injured Spouse Allocation, which can take 11-14 weeks to process
  • Claiming a Recovery Rebate Credit

"Pending"? What does mean?

12/27/2021

Pending status on IRS where my refund site means that your e-filed tax return has been queued in the system and that the IRS hasn't accepted or rejected it yet.
If you e-filed your return before January 31, it will stay in Pending status until the IRS starts processing the backlog of returns.
Keep calm and check back
Until your state or the IRS processes your return, you may see the status there's "no record found." That means the return's still being processed. Just check back in a few days.
