Its been over 21 days. What now?

12/14/2025

It's been longer than 21 days since the IRS received my return and I haven’t gotten my refund. Why? Some tax returns take longer to process than others for many reasons, including when a return:
  • Needs further review in general
  • Errors, Incomplete, inconsistencies
  • You claimed an Earned Income Tax Credit or an Additional Child Tax Credit and due to the legal law PATH ACT, the IRS must wait until mid-February to process refunds.
  • College Credit
  • Is affected by identity theft or fraud
  • Includes a Form 8379, Injured Spouse Allocation PDF, which could take up to 14 weeks to process
IRS will contact you by mail when (or if) they need more information to process your return. You can contact the IRS at (800)829-1040 or check the online at Where’s My Refund? for updated information on your refund.
